Canada’s men’s curling team have avoided any formal punishment at the Winter Olympics after a tense and controversial win against Sweden. Although no penalties were handed out, World Curling issued a warning to the Canadian team over the use of abusive language during their 8–6 victory on Friday and announced that emergency spot checks would now be introduced.
The match was briefly stopped when Sweden accused Canada of breaking the rules by touching the stone after it had been released — something that is strictly forbidden. Swedish officials asked umpires to closely monitor the situation for any further incidents.
With Canada leading 7–6 heading into the final end, tensions rose again. Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson accused Marc Kennedy of double-touching the stone, prompting an angry response from the Canadian player, which included an expletive.
